some text

I am Sylvia Nalubega, an artist and social entrepreneur from Uganda. I present baskets for decoration as wall hangings, baskets for holding saucepans and small baskets for holding table related items such as serviettes or the like. Made from local materials; raffia, banana fibers and papyrus, the baskets come in all forms to the taste of the client. The brown basket on the right is one made from banana fibers and “bukeedo” (stem like materials in the middle of a banana leaf; removed and dried). The basket is used for kitchen purposes where it holds hot saucepans and can be put on tables while serving. The basket can be made in any size depending on one’s taste. The cream, black and brown basket on the left is made from raffia, banana fibers and papyrus. It is used for decoration as a wall hanging. The basket below it is also a basket for decoration and is made from only raffia. The small dark brown baskets are made from raffia which is dyed according to one’s preference and are used as table pieces that can hold various items such as serviettes. What inspires us to make baskets is the role and cultural identity they have played over time in the lives of especially women in Uganda and Africa at large. Baskets are a big part of the daily life of communities which motivates us to create a diversity of them that can portray beauty and different functions.
