My name is Sampson Ato Abban and I'm from Kumasi, Ghana. This is an artwork that I created in 2020, about the events that took place that year. I used images, text, and symbols to depict some of the most significant and memorable moments of the first half of 2020, such as the World War 3 fears, the Kobe & Gigi Bryant’s helicopter crash, the George Floyd’s police brutality incident leading to the Black lives matter movement, the Covid-19 pandemic, the Australian bushfires, the murder hornets, and many more. The artwork is meant to capture the chaos, tragedy, and resilience of that year, as well as to encourage people and to show them how great of a fighter they are for how far they’ve come.
I used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create the artwork. I searched for relevant images and news articles on the web, and edited them to fit the collage.
I wanted to create a visual representation of the collective experience of 2020, which was full of surprises, challenges, and emotions. The artwork represents my artistic response to the year 2020, as well as a message of hope and strength to the viewers. It shows that despite the difficulties and uncertainties, we can still find beauty, humour, and courage in life. It also shows that we can use our creativity and voice to raise awareness and inspire change. The artwork is a reflection of my artistic style and vision, which is to create engaging and meaningful images that communicate with the audience on a visual and verbal level.
